Sections Of Body Language
When it comes to reading body language we must understand that it can be categorized into three sections:
Expressions, Gestures, and Position.
1) Expressions
Expressions happen or are situated on the uppermost part of the body from the Neck to the Face.
The neck and face regions are where expressions like gulping and facial expressions like furrowing or smiling take place.
They can be either Micro or Macro expressions:
Micro-expressions
Micro-expressions are the slightest sudden quick expression that takes no longer than 1/20th of a second.
It's a small and quick expression, which is why they are called micro-expressions.
Macro-expressions
are the broad expressions that are obvious and by broad I mean that if a
person is shocked his eyes would widen and his mouth would open and he might say "What!''.
Macro expressions are not quick and sudden but they are obvious and take not too long or too less time to identify.
2) Gestures
Gestures happen and take place in our body mainly from the Shoulders to the Foot. Gestures mostly happen with hands and legs ( so hands on the neck to the face and head are also gestures).
For example, when are angry we would clench our hands into fists, when we are happy we would automatically jump (this type of behavior is called 'gravity-defying behaviors'), and when we are stressed we place our hands on our head.
Even Gestures can either be Micro or Macro gestures.
Micro-gestures
Micro-gestures are the same as micro-expressions, these are gestures that are sudden and quick for a second or less than a second.
Macro-gestures
Macro-gestures are broad gestures and obvious behaviors.
3) Position
It is the movement, direction and position of the body and gestures. For example when we are interested in a conversation with someone we lean our torso towards that person or when we are thinking we place our hands on our chin.
